With National Apprenticeship Week coming up next week, we thought we would have a look at the current Advanced level apprenticeship opportunities. The idea was to pick 10 of the more interesting or unusual ones from our search through ‘Find an apprenticeship‘ database. Very quickly we discovered that finding five was a challenge and even more concerning was the level of variety.
We at the Network are huge fans of apprenticeships! Why wouldn’t we be? ‘Earn while you learn’ is the mantra we often throw around. Only the other day I was chatting to my 12 year old daughter about how she might want to consider undertaking one in the future. Maybe to my failing she didn’t know they were or the progression routes through one. By the time I’d finished, she was clearly questioning her previously stated plan to go to University.
As such, imagine my excitement when I was tasked with writing something about them. Having decided that I would take a look at the more unusual or interesting Advanced apprenticeships currently available, I was disappointed to find such a lack of variety. It’s not just the variety of roles that can be applied for, but the lack of variety in the sectors that are offering one.
- Of the 15 categories, almost half of them (47%) didn’t have any opportunities listed at any level
- That percentage grew to 60% when looking at Advanced and above
- There are currently only 264 degree level apprenticeship places listed
- At the Advanced entry offer the picture looks better with 3,321 listed
What we need, and it’s pretty obvious to me, is more apprenticeships being offered. We also need a greater variety of them offered, I had no idea how many Apprentice Dental Nurses were needed nationwide. Let me be clear, I’m not being disrespectful about the role or the sectors that offer apprenticeships. Nor am I ignoring the current economic situation that the country finds itself in. I just wish more was being done to strengthen this vital route to employment.
